In March 2020 the EU introduced the new Circular Economy Action Plan in which textiles is one of the priority sectors. According to the Action Plan textiles are the fourth highest-pressure sector in Europe for the use of primary raw materials and water and fifth for greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore it is estimated that less than 1% of all textiles and clothing worldwide are recycled into new textiles.
These unsustainable levels of consumption are driven by the global fashion industry both through its marketing of cheaper ‘fast fashion’ items as well as luxury items. Things cannot go on like this – but change is coming.
The Action Plan outlines a number of measures the European Commission intends to implement in order to achieve a circular economy in the fashion and textiles sector including an EU Strategy for Textiles to be adopted in 2021.
In this context this webinar aims to give an overview of upcoming EU legislation primarily Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) which will see fashion brands and producers pay the full cost of end-of-life management of clothing and explain how these changes will impact the fashion industry and wider textiles sector.
