How our brain works can have both a positive and negative effect on every aspect of our professional and personal lives. Understanding how the brain works allows us to manage our responses to situations in a positive way, so that we can move to achieve our goals. The session will explore how our perceptions are a product of both reality and our mindset and how cultivating a “growth” mindset can help us to respond more productively and positively to the challenges we encounter.
To understand the different domains of our emotional mind, participants will also be introduced to The Chimp Paradox (based on the work of Dr. Steven Peters). Dr Peters’ analogy of the ‘Human’, ‘Chimp’, and ‘Computer’ ‘brains’ will be used to help conceptualise how we think and respond to the world around us. Through this analysis, participants will be encouraged to challenge their thinking, consider ‘what is holding them back’ and start to build a toolkit to reformulate and reframe existing thought patterns.
The latter part of the session will address concepts such as assertiveness, confidence, courage, and ‘imposter syndrome’ and how gaining control over these aspects of our thinking can help us to connect more positively with others and build the professional reputation we desire.
Participants will leave the session with a toolkit of tips and techniques to tackle their blockers to success. At the end of the session, participants will also have an opportunity to devise their personal action plan.
Workshop Overview
This interactive workshop will give you the opportunity to take time out of your busy schedule to reflect on what might be holding you back from achieving your professional (and personal) goals. Drawing on neuroscientific theory, the session will explore why we think in the way we do, whether we wish to continue with these thoughts, and how we might apply techniques such as ‘reframing’ to create new, helpful, and enabling neural networks, thought patterns, and habits.
