This workshop is to help inspire work for the Matchgirls Memorial Competition. Write a poem, short flash fiction or make a short phone film on the subject of the Matchgirls. Poet and creative media tutor, Anna Robinson will talk about the Matchgirls strike in 1888, discussing what they did and who they were and provide you with some creative exercises to help you on your way.
In 1888 over 1,400 young women walked out on strike from Bryant and May’s match factory in Bow, East London. This was the first successful strike of women factory workers and led to better, safer working conditions for all. Click here for more about the Strike.
The Matchgirls Memorial is a charitable organisation established to highlight the Strike and remember the Strike leaders’ in the form of a permanent memorial.
