About this Event

How did a middle-class German refugee become so successful in America that he not only became one of its richest citizens, but also the face of one of its most iconic board games? This is the incredible story of Otto Kahn, whose financing of the 1800s railroad boom would make him one of the wealthiest — and generous — people the world had ever seen.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the life, legacy, and properties of Otto Kahn, aka "The King of New York" — an American investment banker who used his considerable wealth to not only build himself some of the country's most exquisite properties, but also give back to the arts community he had originally dreamed of being a part of.

Led by music composer and Otto Kahn researcher Roger Hall, who attended Eastern Military Academy when it resided inside Kahn's Oheka Castle property on Long Island, our deep dive into the exquisite prosperity and philanthropy of Mr. Monopoly will include:

  • An overview of Otto Kahn's life and legacy, from how he made his fortune, to his passion for the arts and helping out musicians and institutions in need
  • A look at Kahn's palatial properties throughout the east coast, both standing and long gone, with exclusive photos inside his Fifth Avenue mansion
  • The dramatic story of his Long Island property, Oheka Castle, and how the second largest private home in America was almost completely destroyed by vandals
  • Personal stories from Roger's time at Eastern Military Academy, which occupied Oheka Castle between its initial sale and 1979
  • The overlooked music career of Otto's son, Roger Wolfe Kahn, whose jazz band hit it big with their 1928 track “Crazy Rhythm”
  • Rare audio clips, including songs from Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso and pianist George Gershwin — both of whom were helped by Otto Kahn

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Roger — any and all questions about Otto Kahn are welcomed and encouraged!
