Almost every calligraphy student who studies copperplate falls in love with it in the process! Often it becomes the student's default calligraphy style thereafter.
In this class you will discover the joys of working with the pointed pen, in the process of studying the traditional script lettering style commonly known as copperplate (a.k.a. English roundhand, for purists). Variations of this script style are by far the most popular lettering styles used for wedding invitations and other wedding-related materials, since this is one of the most beautiful and graceful forms of Western calligraphy. It has great potential for variations and flourishes; you can dress it up or down. It also forms the foundation for the family of contemporary lettering styles known as modern calligraphy.
This class will cover a basic form of the copperplate style, and then if you like you can go on to study the variations in other courses this instructor offers (such as Continuing Copperplate, Flourishing With the Pointed Pen, or Modern Calligraphy).
This class is the last in a series of four courses in calligraphy designed to take complete novices from terrified to terrific! If you have already taken the instructor's Mastering Dip Pens class, then you are ready for Beginning Copperplate. If you have been working your way through the beginner series with this instructor, when you finish this final course in the series, it will complete that solid foundation in all things calligraphy which you have been working toward for months, and you will be amazed at how far you have come in that time!
WHO: This class is designed for adults and mature adolescents.
PREREQUISITE: Mastering Dip Pens, from this instructor, or the equivalent in independent studies. This class is designed for students who are already familiar with how to use a (broad-edge) dip pen, but no previous pointed-pen experience is necessary.
WHERE: Online via Zoom. This will be a small-group live interactive online class, so each student can have their questions answered and get individual feedback as needed.
RECORDINGS: After each class lesson, the recording of it will be available for you to save to your own computer to review at your leisure forever (assuming technology cooperates).
WHEN: This class includes EIGHT weekly lessons, on Tuesdays, February 27 through April 16, 2024, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm Eastern Time. PLEASE NOTE: The day of the week and time of the day are firm, but due to how far in advance this course is being scheduled, it is possible that the schedule for this course may be shifted so that it will start a week or two later *and/or* that one or two weeks will be skipped so that the ending date will be correspondingly later. There will still be eight two-hour lessons on Tuesday evenings starting late in February or sometime in March regardless, and you will be notified ASAP if the schedule changes.
SUPPLIES: The supply list may be found here: Supply list for Beginning Copperplate class NOTE: The supply lists for the Mastering Dip Pens class and the Beginning Copperplate class have been combined because there is so much overlap between them, and most students take the two classes one right after the other. The list is divided into three sections (both classes, Mastering Dip Pens class only, Beginning Copperplate class only), with each one marked clearly.
