Worshipped for his beauty, genius and raw sex appeal, Rudolf Hametovich Nureyev (1938-1993) was an icon of ballet who redefined the role of the male dancer. One of ballet’s first male legends, Nurevey was obsessed over by devoted ‘Rudimania’ fans who fueled his stratospheric journey into dance stardom. In a parallel world of sex and politics, his story is also bound up in the sexual revolution of the 60s, while his untimely death changed the way we spoke about people living with HIV/AIDS.
Born on a train in Soviet Russia to Tartar peasant parents and taught by ballet master Aleksandr Pushkin, he was a sensation in the USSR performing with the Kirov Ballet. During a tour of Paris with the company in 1961 he raised eyebrows among KGB watchers when he visited local gay bars and later became international news as he defected to the West by escaping his Soviet minders at the Parisian airport and pleading for asylum.
Nureyev was instantly signed by the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas and his international career again. His first American appearance was as a guest of the Chicago Opera Ballet in 1962 and in the same year he made his first appearance with the Royal Ballet, which began a long relationship with the London-based company that would culminate with his famous pairing with Margot Fonteyn. It was also within this timeframe that he met his handsome lover Erik Bruhn, a soloist with the Royal Danish Ballet.
From renowned performances of the works of the greatest choreographers (including Frederick Ashton, George Balanchine and Martha Graham) to staging his own productions (including Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet and Manfred) he opened up the art form to a wider audience and pushed this further with his televised performances as well as film roles in Don Quixote (1973), Valentino (1977) and Exposed (1983). In the 80s he became Artistic Director of Paris Opera Ballet, presiding over what is regarded by many as the golden era of the company, with Nureyev both choreographing and dancing, most memorably with a teenage Sylvie Guillem who he promoted to Principal Dancer.
As part of Oscar Wilde Tours’ online talk on the life of Nureyev, we also look at his circle of famous and artistic queer friends (among them were Freddie Mercury, Gore Vidal and Andy Warhol) and the rumours that swirled around his physical dimensions and promiscuous sexual appetite. Everything about him was larger than life and generated excitement.
