About this Event

“Her wonderful talent should be studied by all vocalists; her regal presence is pure elegance and charm.” – Frank Sinatra, 1994

In a career that lasted over 50 years, Miss Peggy Lee (Norma Deloris Egstrom) was the woman who most consistently gave us all "Fever," and best demonstrated how the blues and jazz could be popular music. From her rise to stardom as a singer with Benny Goodman to becoming the #1 female vocalist on the nascent Capitol Records, this is the story of one of the most prolific American songwriters and entertainers of the 20th century.

Join New York Adventure Club as we delve into the incredible career and music of Jazz & Blues star Peggy Lee, a pioneering musical feminist whose professional and artistic talents as a musician, entertainer, and actor earned her the nickname of the "Female Frank Sinatra."

Led by Will Friedwald, columnist for the Wall Street Journal, our virtual analysis and discussion of the legendary Peggy Lee will include:

  • An overview of Peggy's early life from her humble origins as the daughter of a railroad man from North Dakota to moving to Hollywood at the age of 17
  • An analysis of Peggy's original songs and why she was virtually the only female singing star of her day to consistently write great songs, such as her hits "Manana," "It's a Good Day," and "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'"
  • A look at Peggy's movie roles, including her onscreen appearances with Benny Goodman in "Stage Door Canteen," her acting gigs in "Pete Kelly's Blues" and "The Jazz Singer," and her singing performance of original music for the Disney classic "Lady and the Tramp"
  • A discussion of Peggy's amazing radio and television career, in which she shared the stage (and screen) with everyone from Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Dean Martin, Jimmy Durante, and even Johnny Cash
  • Peggy's personal triumphs and tribulations, from her four husbands to daughter and grand-daughter, to her long-term struggles with poor health as well as her legal battle against a music business model that failed to provide for the artists it depended upon

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Will — any and all questions about Peggy Lee are welcomed and encouraged!
