Carlow University's Sister Mary Paul Educator Workshop Series present: Mental Health, Wellness, and Creative Expression in the Arts.

About this Event

Registered attendees will receive an emailed Zoom link the day of the event.

During this session, we will discuss ways in which you can support overall wellness through creative expression and mindful practice. Carrie and Desiree have collaborated on different initiatives within Propel Schools, with a commitment to promoting equitable access to the Arts and Wellness. Across all of Propel Schools, 85% of students qualify for the federal free/reduced-cost lunch program, 86% are a minority and 19% have special needs. Propel serves 4,000 students at 13 Allegheny County locations.

Guest presenter, Carrie Woodard, MA, NCC, NCSC (she/her/hers)

Carrie Woodard is a National Certified School Counselor who has worked in a variety of schools and has served students through various roles and titles. She has had experience as a middle school social studies teacher, high school counselor, and College and Career Counselor, which have all provided her with valuable insight into the way students learn and succeed. Currently, Ms. Woodard serves as the Project Manager for Propel Partners in Wellness (PPIW), the comprehensive wellness support system for Propel Schools, a charter school system in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. PPIW specializes in strength-based, behavior, and wellness coaching for students, families, and school staff.

Guest presenter, Desiree Matia, MFA (she/her/hers)

Desiree Matia earned a B.S.Ed. in art education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and earned her M.F.A. in painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design, in Savannah, Georgia. Her experience as an educator and practicing artist has offered opportunities for multiple perspectives on the impact of the Arts. She has taught in various capacities, including formal K-12 settings, mentorship, artist workshops, and community education. She creates large-scale abstract paintings with a focus on the relationships between the materials, formal elements and intuition. Currently, Matia is an Arts District Coach at Propel Schools in Pittsburgh, supporting Visual Art, Music, and Movement teachers across the thirteen schools in the district.
