This event is presented in partnership between Politics and Prose and Harvard Bookstore.
Klara and the Sun, the first novel by Kazuo Ishiguro since he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, tells the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. This thrilling book offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: what does it mean to love?
Ishiguro will be in conversation with Dr. Kate Darling , a leading expert in Robot Ethics and a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab, where she explores the emotional connection between people and life-like machines, seeking to influence technology design and policy direction. She is the author of The New Breed: What Our History with Animals Reveals About Our Future With Robots. Her work has been featured in Vogue, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and many others. She is the caretaker for several domestic robots, including her Pleos Yochai, Peter, and Mr. Spaghetti.
The first 250 registrants will receive a special bookplate signed by the author (book must be purchased on Eventbrite to qualify).
