In line with this vision, we launch ‘Kala Samvada—Conversations on Art’, a fortnightly series that will provide an opportunity to interact with maestros from various segments of Indian art through live online sessions of lec-dems, interviews, talks and performances.
Coming up is a lec-dem on the Veena, its evolution and styles by musician, teacher, research scholar Dr. R. S. Jayalakshmi.

Dr. R. S. Jayalakshmi was initiated into music when she was merely just six years old. She would watch her older sister in music class, and would repeat all the lessons that she heard. Realising she had a natural flair for music, her father arranged for her to receive training. When she was 21 years old, Jayalakshmi obtained a Government of India scholarship to pursue veena lessons from Pichumani Iyer. By then, she had started performing for All India Radio as well as at sabhas like Sri Krishna Gana Sabha and the Indian Fine Arts Society.
After completing the Teacher’s Training Course from the Music Academy, Chennai, she underwent further training under noted veena vidwan R. Pichumani Iyer, after securing a Government of India scholarship. An 'A' Grade artist of All India Radio, she is a faculty member of the Advanced School of Music run by The Music Academy, and the Haridoss Giri School of Music of the Narada Gana Sabha.
