- **Event Description**: Seminar InformationThe aims of the seminar are to better quantify the fire hazard by studying the impact of different fuels and ventilation conditions on fire development, visit the current practice in design fire selection for performance- based design and consider potential directions to facilitate choosing credible growth curves. The impact of fire and smoke spread may not be well understood. Therefore, hazards associated with flammability and potential ignition are often qualitatively established based on perceived risks rather than quantitatively referenced to real hazards. The fire performance of different fuels needs to be assessed and quantified relative to a hazard through the development of a series of probabilities, including those related to ignition, incubation, fire spread, fire environment, occupant response, and time to egress. Doing so will lead toward much-improved estimation of fire hazards and lead to more representative performance-based design. The lecture will dive deep into the impact of different parameters on the fire growth, including mechanical ventilation, fuel volatility and ventilation sensitivity. Considerations will be presented on risk, probability of ignition, propensity of objects to ignite, fire initiation, incubation, and growth, and whether the frequently used t2 methodologies are representative as predictive inputs. The presentation will consider a larger subset of fire dynamics including: the impact of ACMV and reduced propensity of window failure in energy-efficient buildings on smoke recirculation, and corresponding oxygen reduction and carbon monoxide accumulation. He is currently researching at the University of Waterloo, in Canada, while continuing to practice as a fire engineering consultant. In the past, he has initiated, grown and developed the largest fire engineering firm in Canada, and lead an international firm’s global practice in forensic engineering.
