Most pioneer companies like Google, Spotify, and Twitter are using it right now.About this EventI hear a lot these days that many companies have decided to implement the OKRs. Well, that’s totally fine! The problem is when I talk to most of them, I find out they either have NO or WRONG answers to two fundamental questions: The first one: why do you want to use the OKRs?The answers:Many companies are using OKRs now. (as simple as that!)We want to implement the employees’ performance management system (bonus and punishment).We want to have more control over the employeesWe want to implement task management and to-do list system There are some other answers that are not worth mentioning. And the second question is: how do you want to implement the OKRs?The answer: well, we’ve heard something and read some books about it, it seems it is so easy!!! we’ll start implementing it now to see what will actually happen!In fact, using the objective and key result's framework blindly, as it’s become a trend, not only has no benefits but also will lead to a lot of waste, like the wasted time and energy spent on useless meetings! So we need to fully understand in the first place what requirements the OKRs are going to meet and more importantly why they have been composed. Then we’ll have to clearly specify what benefits they will provide to the company and what gaps, which the OKRs have been composed to fill, they can fulfill.It is really a shame to hear things like “we want to use the OKRs just because many other companies are using it”!!!It’s also wrong to use the OKRs as the employees’ performance management system. Because one of the main goals of using the OKRs is to stretch us (stretch goals) and to make us stop roof-shot thinking and aim for moon-shot one. It’s that simple! When you tie the OKRs to bonuses and punishments, your people won’t set big goals that if they can’t achieve they will be punished for or miss their bonus. Rather, they would set goals they know they can fulfill to get their bonus. But that’s not what the OKRs are meant for! We know it’s so good to use a framework to specify the company goals, but this is only a small function of the OKRs and you could most probably use other methods like SMART for that purpose. Therefore, it’s not worth using the OKRs and actually wasting that much time, energy, and also money for such trivial purposes.The OKRs’ framework is so lightweight and very easy to understand. However, when it comes to implementing it, it has many details that have to be taken into consideration. You should not implement some parts of it and take the others for granted. You should also note that all members of the organization need to be engaged in the process of defining the OKRs and one can NOT dictate them.The OKRs meetings have to be held properly before the start of each quarter so that there as few ambiguities as possible and more importantly the dependencies become clear. Also, the progress of the OKRs has to be checked weekly as well as quarterly.Additionally, the retrospective meetings that are held in SCRUM have to be used in the OKRs’ framework more strongly in teams. What we are looking forward to is the lessons learned not the blames. Finally, the achievement of the team must be determined and celebrated at the end of each quarter.There are lots of other must-dos that are both cultural and process-oriented.
