Illustrated talk about the pioneering GCSE text book based on our Notting Hill Black history walk with commentary, extra notes and videos.

About this Event

Presented in association with Barnet Libraries

Black History Walks has worked with Pearson education to convert our Notting Hill walk into a GCSE exam text book. The book covers individuals and topics never covered before at this level, including:

  • Baron Baker and Black self defence groups
  • Notting Hill 'riots' of 1958
  • Black economic self empowerment
  • Black British Civil rights
  • Claudia Jones and the Black media
  • The Mangrove 9
  • Housing racism and West Indian community solutions
  • The White Australia policy
  • Caribbean food, blues/shebeens and music
  • Police brutality before Black Lives Matter
  • African/Caribbean World War 2 connections

This illustrated talk will take you through the book, pointing out the exciting new areas for study, the resources and additional references as well as intriguing histories outside the scope of GCSE.

This event is organised by Barnet Libraries in conjunction with Black History Walks

Look out for our new book 'Black History Walks in London Volume 1'. This is part of Jacaranda Books revolutionary Twenty in 2020 initiative to publish 20 books by 20 Black British authors in 2020. An unprecedented feat. 'Black History Walks in London Volume 1' is the 20th of that series but was delayed to this year due to the Coronavirus
