Memory and lyric are mutually surfaced and recomposed in recent work from Ari Banias and Silvina López Medin. Crossings, loops, accretions, and erosions complicate and stretch the poets' narratives of family, self, and place. In their different embraces of flicker and indeterminacy, both writers raise the ineffable to the meniscus of perception.
Ari Banias is a poet living in Oakland. His books are A Symmetry (2021) and Anybody (2016), both from W. W. Norton.
Silvina López Medin was born in Buenos Aires and lives in New York. Her books of poetry include Excursion (Oversound Chapbook Prize, 2020) and That Salt on the Tongue to Say Mangrove, translated by Jasmine V. Bailey (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 2021). Her hybrid book Poem That Never Ends (2021) was a winner of the Essay Press/University of Washington Bothell Contest. She co-translated Anne Carson’s Eros the Bittersweet into Spanish. Her writing has appeared in Ploughshares, Hyperallergic, Brooklyn Rail, Harriet Books/Poetry Foundation, and MoMA/post, among others. She is an editor at Ugly Duckling Presse.
