Black Detroiters have been through Detroit’s greatest moments and often bear the brunt of its worst. Too often those low-points stemmed from racist federal and local policies that disproportionately impacted Black Detroiters. From segregation and redlining, to police brutality and the destruction of Black and immigrant neighborhoods, systemic racism has been a part of the city’s story since its founding. This virtual tour will provide an overview of some of the most racist and significant events in Detroit’s last 100 years - how did we get here and where are we going now?
Detroit Experience Factory has always made sure to tell the stories of how Detroit got to where it is today providing historical context, we feel it’s especially important to tell these particular stories now.
This tour is free but any donations will be given to local racial justice organizations (see schedule: Sept. + Nov. - Black Lives Matter Detroit, Oct. + Dec. - Detroit Justice Center). This tour has been selling out so if you are no longer able to attend, please let us know so we can cancel your ticket and open the spot up to another participant.
