About this Event

2022 Infant & Toddler InstituteWorking Well with Babies: Comprehensive Competencies for Educators of Infants and Toddlers

Description: Do you know how important your work is as an educator of infants, toddlers, and families? The science of child development shows us just how crucial you are to the long-term success of children and families, and COVID-19 has just proven how crucial this work is to the functioning of our nation. Consider how complex your roles are, and how many different skills you use every day to ensure babies’ health and well-being, provide emotional connection and comfort, support their rapidly changing development, guide their behavior, and coordinate with families and other caregivers. And not just for one unique baby, but many! This is not rocket science … it’s much harder! Working Well with Babies provides a comprehensive look at all that you do, and a resource for helping you do your best work with our youngest learners. Working as an educator with babies (birth to three years) and their families is one of the most important and complex professions in our society. Educators need nine sets of competencies educators to do their best work with babies and families: Reflective Practices (RFP), Building and Supporting Relationships (REL), Partnering with and Supporting Diverse Families (FAM), Guiding Behavior (GDB), Supporting Development and Learning (SDL), Assessing Behavior, Development, and Environments (ABD), Including Infants and Toddlers with Special Support Needs (INC), Mentoring, Coaching, and Leadership (LED), and Professionalism (PRO). We will describe these sets of competencies, as well as the workplace conditions (program policies and practices) that support them. Participants will have opportunities to self-reflect on their own super-powers (competencies they have mastered) as infant/toddler educators, and set goals for their own development as professionals.
