Why it is called Oktoberfest when it happens in September

A horse race on a Munich meadow in 1810, watched by a royal couple and a cheering crowd

Oktoberfest in Omro borrows its name from a Munich custom that began in October 1810. That month Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese, and the city marked it with feasting and a horse race on a meadow later named in her honour. Munich kept the party going year after year, and eventually brought it forward into September, when the evenings are longer and warmer.
