Every year, the Omaha Chapter of AAZK hosts a bowling event to raise funds for a chosen conservation effort. This year the event will be called “Pins for Pinns,” as we are supporting The Marine Mammal Center, a non-profit organization in Sausalito, California. The Marine Mammal Center advances ocean health through marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation, research, and education. This largely volunteer-run facility cares for many stranded marine mammal species, the majority of which are Pinnipeds, by caring for sick and injured patients until they can be released back to their ocean home. Pinnipeds are a group of animals comprised of seals, sea lions, and walruses. Since 1975, The Marine Mammal Center has rescued more than 27,000 marine mammals along 600 miles of California, but also the Big Island of Hawaii.
There are 34 species of Pinnipeds in the world, and Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium houses two of them in their state-of-the-art Owen Sea Lion Shores habitat – harbor seals and California sea lions. Despite our distance, these animals help connect the people of Omaha to the ocean, which is facing many challenges. These include the depletion of several fish species, increasing ocean temperatures, and harmful human activity. Despite being a land locked state here in Nebraska, our actions still have an impact. Pollution in our local lakes and rivers will eventually make its way to the ocean, so it is as much our responsibility to care for the ocean as it is anyone else’s. In recognizing and contributing to organizations like The Marine Mammal Care Center, we aim to not only shed light on these challenges but also foster a greater appreciation for the many pinniped species that call our oceans home.
