What does a 19th-century villain wear? How do you convey that a newsboy is a hero? May Routh, the costume designer of the 1992 Disney musical "Newsies," brought rich costuming choices to the screen to answer these very questions. Join Durham Collection Technician and historian Libby Rea to explore historical costuming on the big screen through the lens of the museum's textile collection. Understand the choices behind Jack "Cowboy" Kelly’s character design, why Spot Conlon had to have a cane, and how real people would have dressed during this period, known as the Gilded Age.

Guests are invited to enjoy a social hour beginning at 5PM, with snacks and drinks available for purchase and access to the museum’s featured exhibition, "Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume." The presentation begins at 6:30PM.

Registration is required. Regular admission applies. Free for museum members.
