About the film: For nearly a century, Omaha’s Downtown was the city’s economic and cultural engine—until suburban expansion shifted the region toward car dependency. Today, Omaha is among the most car-centric cities in the country, with major consequences for safety, sustainability, and economic development.

Car-Centric examines how transportation and city planning shape Omaha’s future and what steps we can take toward a more vibrant, connected city. The discussion will touch on topics of daily life commuting and navigating the roads of Omaha, alternative modes of transportation and urban planning.

Meet the Panelists
Nate Johnson is the Director of Operations & Development at Keep Omaha Beautiful where he does desk job work to support the nonprofit’s environmental education, waste reduction, litter cleanup, and tree planting efforts. He grew up west of 72nd Street before moving to Midtown while attending UNO, where he earned his graduate degrees in Urban Studies and Public Administration. Nate is a driver, pedestrian, and an irregular biker and transit user. He is passionate about sustainable urban development, communities that work for people and the environment, and outdoor spaces. Nate lives in Midtown Omaha with his wife.

Cait Dumas-Hein is the Associate Director of Bike Walk Nebraska. In this role, she leads statewide active transportation policy, programming, and initiatives from the Cowboy Trail to the urban core of Omaha. She has a decade of experience advocating for system-based changes to increase access and equity for both recreation and transportation-based cycling and mobility.

Spending most of her childhood and adulthood in central Nebraska, Cait calls Nebraska home and believes that decreasing our car dependency and prioritizing holistic transportation planning will create safer, stronger communities for all.

Joseph Giitter is the director of Car-Centric. He serves as the ODIDA Activation Committee Chair, owner of Bohemian Photoworks, adjunct Professor at Bellevue University. Joseph is a local photographer & videographer.
