The Birds
Guest Programmed by Squin, Olympia Film Society Volunteer of the Year
Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds is an unforgettable masterpiece that is considered one of the most terrifying films from the Master of Suspense. When Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) travels to Bodega Bay in pursuit of eligible bachelor Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor), she is inexplicably attacked by a seagull. Suddenly, thousands of birds begin to flock into town, preying on schoolchildren and residents in a terrifying series of attacks.

“I have been a long time horror movie fan, but that was not always the case: as a child I was quite terrified of even the tamest horror fare (The Mummy with Brendan Fraser? Far too scary to make it past the first half hour). This is why I have chosen to program Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, as it is one of my earliest memories of making it through a horror movie, and while I was still scared, for maybe the first time it was kind of fun to be scared. It would still be a good number of years before I was brave enough to see any new horror films in the theater, but The Birds was one of the first steps in turning me into the insatiable gorehound I am today, and I am very excited to revisit it on the Capitol Theater screen with all of you.” – Squin, OFS Volunteer of the Year
“Alfred Hitchcock has fashioned a major work of cinematic art…” – Andrew Sarris, Village Voice
