Supernatural on 35mm
Introduced by Rob Patrick, Olympia Film Society’s Director of Programming, on 11/7
In a departure from her usual comedy roles, screen legend Carole Lombard co-stars with western icon Randolph Scott in this chilling tale of the supernatural. Experience haunting paintings, maniacal laughing, outstretched hands, and deeply disturbing shots of terrible deeds.
Dir: Victor Halperin / 1933 / US / 65 min
“In real life, Carole Lombard was deeply superstitious (she famously sought guidance from a numerologist when it came to drawing up her screen name). The beloved movie star even refused to work with Patsy Kelly, a hard luck performer who Carole thought to be doomed. Here, Lombard plays a character on the receiving end of unsettling news, menacing specters, and opportunistic fiends. All told, this cursed film likely belongs at the bottom of a well. In its time, Supernatural was poorly received. Upon modern reappraisal, the title remains in search of an audience. But for those finding themselves susceptible to unsettling closeups and high contrast scares, prepare yourself to be spellbound.” – Rob Patrick, Olympia Film Society
