- **Event Description**: This year marks the 6th annual Jerry Garcia Birthday Bash at West Central Park featuring the music of The Fauxhemians and Return to DeadGrass. For years now, deadheads, friends, and music lovers from around the region have been congregating at the park to celebrate Jerry and his music. This year would have been Jerry Garcia’s 84th birthday. He passed away on August 9th, 1995 at the age of 53. Jerry Garcia was the band leader and lead guitarist for psychedelic rock pioneers The Grateful Dead. The Grateful Dead, part of the 1960s San Francisco Bay Area “hippie” revolution, were known for their innovative improvisations and legendary fan following. “Dead Heads,” as they are known, would travel from city to city following the band on tour for multiple shows, making the Grateful Dead the #1 grossing musical touring act in the US in 1991. The band disbanded after the death of Jerry Garcia, but in it’s place have sprung up hundreds of bands covering the songs of the Grateful Dead, including Dead and Company, which includes original members of the Grateful Dead. One of the most successful of these bands since the 1990s is Dark Star Orchestra, which began in Chicago in 1997. Dark Star Orchestra’s founding
drummer, Ahmer Nizam, will be part of the show at West Central Park with the band The Fauxhemians.
The Fauxhemians, from Olympia, WA, is an alter-ego band of Vendredi’s Bag, a staple of the Olympia jazz scene for the past decade. The band is led by former SPSCC Jazz Band Director James Schneider, and includes Danielle Westbrook, Betsy Perkins, Theo Ragan, Matt Booth, and Ahmer Nizam. For Jerry’s Birthday Bash, the group lets go of its jazz repertoire and indulges in the songbook of Jerry Garcia, grounded by the experienced psychedelic rock drumming of Ahmer from his time with Dark Star
Orchestra. Lead guitarist James Schneider is a long time Olympia musician and founding member of the top 20 CMJ charting jazz group Hot Club Sandwich, which includes a recording, No Pressure, with mandolinist David Grisman, a common musical companion of Jerry’s. Vocalist Danielle Westbrook has been performing since childhood with her professional musician father and is co-founder of the social network Olympia Jazz Central and Olympia Funk Festival.
Return to DeadGrass is led by renowned Seattle musician Ricky Gene Powell. Return of DeadGrass reinterprets the music of the Grateful Dead with a bluegrass acoustic twist that includes all eras of the Grateful Dead’s legacy. Ricky Gene’s Infectious, uplifting music is joyfully performed and he features a stellar lineup of musicians, all of whom process a tremendous ability to provide a transformative experience, while creating fresh approaches to collaborative music. The group includes Ricky Gene
Powell on mandolin and vocals, Tom Rooney on guitar and vocals, Colin Klein on banjo, Tim Wetmiller on violin and Jim Marsh on upright bass.
