My mantis, Felicity, was such a good model talking photos for this workshop. The mantis you get will look a lot like her: a Chinese Praying Mantis!You'll learn all about praying mantis care while you decorate your habitat jar. It's tons of fun! Honestly, praying mantises have become one of my favorite bugs to have as a pet. They're so inquisitive, low maintenance, and easy to handle. It's really amazing to watch them grow!For food, they'll eat flightless fruit flies for most of their lives. You can make an infinite flightless fruit fly generator, only having to change out the fruit fly food every couple weeks. They stay nicely contained in a special container, ready to dump in when your mantis is hungry. I'll show you how it's done!At the end of Summer, your mantis will reach its full size of 3-5 inches, growing wings and outgrowing its habitat jar. That's when it's time to move him to an empty fish tank, or keep him in one of those pop-up mesh things kids raise butterflies in. The butterfly tents are available online for around $10, while tanks are often $10 on Facebook marketplace. You'll want to start feeding him mealworms from the pet store, or spotted lanternflies from outside. Mantises look even cooler when they're big!As a part of the workshop, you’ll get to see all the animals that live at the shop — including dart frogs, snails, and axolotls.The workshop is designed to be cozy, low-pressure, ADHD and autism friendly, and fun for all ages.
