Welcome spring with a day of guided hikes and hands-on learning at Carter Caves State Resort Park! Join us on Saturday, March 21, 2026, for Spring Foray, a special event hosted in partnership with the Bluegrass Mycological Society, focused on fungi, forest ecology, and nighttime exploration.
🌿 1:30 PM – Guided Foray Hike (Horn Hollow Trail)
Explore select areas along the Horn Hollow Trail where fungi have been documented in past seasons. Learn what’s growing this spring while hiking with knowledgeable guides. We won’t cover the entire trail, but will focus on key spots for observation and discussion. Please bring water and wear closed-toed shoes. No specimens will be collected by participants.
📚 4:00 PM – Foray Class at the Amphitheater
Head to the amphitheater next to Lewis Caveland Lodge for an engaging mycology class. This session covers the basics of fungi, local species, and seasonal growth, making it perfect for beginners and nature enthusiasts alike.
🌙 7:30 PM – UV Night Hike (Natural Bridge Trail)
End the day with a guided UV night hike on the Natural Bridge Trail. This easy 0.5-mile loop uses UV lights to reveal glowing fungi and other nighttime surprises—a fun and family-friendly way to experience the forest after dark.
