Swingstation is pleased to partner Alex McCormack to present Jazzerz, his Authentic Jazz Bootcamp.
Alexandre McCormack Early on, Alex dedicated himself to Breakin’ and has taught various street styles since 2006. In 2013, Alex discovered old films such as Hellzapoppin and The Spirit Moves, which set him on a path to learn and teach the “old-style” of Lindy Hop and jazz. He believes mastering the foundations is key to understanding the dance and personalizing it. His motto is: “Master the foundation to understand the dance and personalise to contribute to it.” He regularly jams to uptempo Bebop Swing, mambo, and slow blues. Alex also trains with the group Old Soulz.
In this bootcamp, Alex will take us from the 1910 Charleston to the modern day styles of dance and music.
It is OPEN Level which means everyone is invited to join, but it will be fast paced and energetic! We recommend that you have some basic knowledge in vernacular jazz steps or are an intermediate street dancer, ready to learn about the old school style of jazz from the African-American culture. Check this out and familiarize yourself with as many moves as possible!

Thu 26 Feb 2026 ADD ON ($45, NOT included in full Pass). Basic Jazz for Absolute Beginners. If you don't know your Susie Q from your Tackie Annie, this is the class for you. Alex will take you through all the steps that are the very roots of Jazz, Tap and hip hop! THIS IS HELD AT ALIWAL ARTS CENTRE

12:00pm -1:30pm Extended Jazz Foundation. This is the time to fact check all your jazz moves and get to the core of what makes each step special.
1:30pm - 3:00pm Bebop, the Art of Freestyling & creating steps Bebop is characterized by its fast tempos, complex harmonies and melodies, and intricate improvisational solos. Just as Bebop pushed the boundaries of jazz in music, can dancers push their abilities to match?
3:30pm - 5:00pm Dancing to Jazz/Soul/Funk music Soul and funk are just some of the styles that emerged from the roots of jazz. Let’s see how the dance also progressed to vibe with the different musical styles.
8:00pm Party and Battle! A space to experiment and exchange. When does old school meet new school? And who gets schooled anyway?! Here, history is the teacher and we are just students that want to dance. Blues becomes Charleston becomes Jazz becomes Bebop becomes Soul becomes Funk and more. No rules except listen to what the music tells you.

12:00pm -1:30pm Jazz routine & Coaching A small routine is taught and then polished to add concepts and ideas about presentation and showmanship to make each performance shine!
1:30pm - 3:00pm Rhythm and Flash steps The dancers of the 30s honed their skills in Rhythm and Flash steps to make themselves stand out and be memorable! Let’s see how many of these steps you can make your own.
3:30pm - 5:00pm Slides Slides come from the lineage of Tap where the metal taps made floors as slippery as ice. Wear your smoothest leather shoes for this one!
*BATTLE FORMAT
Prelims = armageddon style. 4 people in each corner, go in 1 by 1 for 45 seconds. Judges choose a single winner.
Semi-finals : 1vs1 format. 1 minute each one time.
Finals : 1vs1 format. 1 minute each, two rounds.
Music : swing, bebop, rnb, boogie, mambo.
The Style will be drawn by a competitor before each round
