- **Event Name**: Urban Renewal Talk & Exhibit
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sun, 16 Nov, 2025 at 01:00 pm
- **Event Description**: The Ogdensburg History Museum is proud to announce an upcoming lecture and exhibit featuring renowned historian, Prof. David Hochfelder. The lecture, titled "Picturing Urban Renewal: A Digital History of New York State," will take place on November 16th at 1pm at the museum located at 206 Ford St, Ogdensburg, NY.

In addition to the lecture and exhibit, the Ogdensburg History Museum is excited to offer museum members the opportunity to reserve tickets online for the event. Members will also receive early access to the Urban Renewal exhibit, light refreshments, and reserved seating for the lecture.

Prof. Hochfelder, Associate Prof and undergraduate director of the Department of History at SUNY Albany, is a highly respected scholar in the fields of U.S. history of technology, U.S. urban history, and digital scholarship. He holds a PhD from Case Western Reserve University, an MS from Northwestern University, and a BS from Northwestern University.

Along with historians Ann Pfau and Stacy Sewell, Prof. Hochfelder is currently working on a digital history project titled "Picturing Urban Renewal." The project, which has received two planning grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, focuses on the history of urban renewal in New York State. The team is currently applying for implementation grants to further their research.

The Ogdensburg History Museum will also be hosting the Urban Renewal Traveling Exhibit from November 10th to December 8th. The exhibit showcases the impact of the federal urban renewal program, also known as "slum clearance," in New York State. The program, which was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949, aimed to provide "decent homes in wholesome surroundings for low-income families now living in the squalor of the slums." However, in its 25 years of existence, the program failed to meet this objective.

The exhibit features information and photographs from 250 urban renewal projects undertaken by 91 villages, towns, and cities in New York State. It sheds light on the successes and failures of the program and its impact on communities.

The Ogdensburg History Museum is honored to host Prof. Hochfelder and the Urban Renewal Traveling Exhibit. This event is a unique opportunity for the community to learn about an important aspect of New York State's history and engage with a leading expert in the field.
