Hanging Air Plants- Oyster Garden Workshop

Join Dr. Megan Moore the UF/IFAS Extension Florida Sea Grant Agent for Pasco County, to make Hanging Air Plant Oyster Gardens! These Planted Oyster Gardens will make a beautiful decoration for your home and they will help to support oyster reef education. Join us for an exciting, creative, and educational workshop to build beautiful Planted Oyster Gardens and contribute to oyster restoration education. You will learn about the amazing benefits of oysters, build a customized Air Plant Garden for your home, and help support oyster restoration.

Typical Vertical Oyster Gardens (VOGs) are hung in coastal waterways and use recycled oyster shells to create new oyster reef habitats. Oysters provide many amazing benefits for our marine ecosystems, where devices like VOGs can help to restore declining populations. Educating others about the importance of oysters can help with their recovery.

We will provide all of the materials needed to build your Hanging Air Plant Oyster Gardens including:

• Air Plants
• Crystal Beads
• Moss
• Wire
• Oysters

You can customize your Air Plant Oyster Garden! Bring anything else you want to add. Here are a few suggestions:

• Additional Plants!*
• Small wind chimes
• Feathers
• Charms

*Plants will be placed in-between oyster shells and padded with sphagnum moss. Due to the structure of the hanging gardens plants such as air plants, ferns, and orchids are best.

If you're interested in helping us to support oyster reef restoration further, you can also help us build Vertivcal Oyster Garden restoration devices during the workshop to be hung in coastal waterways.
