Intro
For his debut concert Panagiotis Nikolakis has picked a versatile programme in eras and styles that sheds light to different aspects of violin playing. From the virtuosity of Ysaye to the powerful double violin Prokofiev sonata. And today's journey begins and finishes with the simplicity of Bach and the period themes and dances of Stravinsky.
Program:
J.S. Bach
Violin Sonata No.3 in C major, BWV 1005
i. Adagio
ii. Fuga
iii. Largo
iv. Allegro assai
Bach’s Sonata No. 3 in C major is a monumental work in the violin repertoire, crowned by the Fugue, one of Bach’s greatest contrapuntal achievements. At the same time the slow first and third movements speak with clarity and simplicity, offering moments of calmness and direct expression. The closing Allegro assai dances with lightness and playfulness.
E. Ysaye
Violin sonata No. 5 in G major, op.27
i. L’Aurore
ii. Danse Rustique
Ysaÿe’s 5th violin sonata is inspired by nature. The opening movement evokes the stillness and shifting light through delicate, impressionistic writing from the dusk of dawn to a full sunrise. The final Danse rustique brings the sonata to life with rural rhythms and vivid energy, showcasing the violin’s colour and character.
Pause
S. Prokofiev
Double violin sonata op. 56
i. Adante cantabile
ii. Allegro
iii. Commodo (quasi allegretto)
iv. Allegro con Brio
With Alex Chiu (violin)
Written without accompaniment, this striking work is built on clear lines and strong contrasts between the two instruments.
Lyrical moments alternate with sharp biting rhythms and playful exchanges, leading to a lively and energetic finale.
I. Stravinsky
Suite italienne for violin and Piano (arr. Dushkin)
i. Introduzione
ii. Serenata
iii. Tarantella
iv. Gavotte con due variazioni
v. Scherzino
vi. Minuetto e finale

Finally, Arranged from his ballet *Pulcinella*, the suite italienne brings together bright, dance-like movements full of charm and wit. Stravinsky’s playful harmonies and rhythms give the music a sparkling energy, while lyrical themes add warmth and elegance.
