Gaelic Communities and the new languages act

An informal discussion about the opportunities and challenges for Gaelic communities following the recent passage of the Scottish Languages Act. 

While the Act mentions areas of linguistic significance, Gaelic community plans and community planning’ it is still unclear exactly how these new mechanisms will work together and what impact they will have.

We will hear from:
• Organisations currently involved in the design of Gaelic community plans.
• A language planning officer from the island of Inis Oírr in Ireland who will explain the system they have in place.
• Misneachd, who have been campaigning to strengthen the Act and to ensure that the guidance and resources that come out of it are as robust as possible. We will provide a brief explanation of what the Act is and what it means.
• Anyone interested in the subject who wishes to share their views.

This event will be held in the Mòd Exhibition marquee in the Nevis Centre, Fort William from 11am on Wednesday 15 October 2025.

The event will be primarily through the medium of Gaelic.
