Drawing from years of research across archives and mining sites in India, Shutzer explores the long-term impacts of property systems in shaping and maintaining global investments in India’s coal-bearing lands, as well as the legacies of environmental degradation and land dispossession that have ignited various challenges to India’s fossil fuel system, ranging from political movements demanding land redistribution, Adivasi (Indigenous) secession, the ecological rehabilitation of mining landscapes, and Maoist paramilitary and counterinsurgency warfare.
