The Showcase On Telegraph
A performance curated by musicians for musicians. We are centered around quality music, community building, and culturally progressive ideals.
The inaugural showcase will feature Skip The Needle, Maya Songbird, and Tell Me Tell Me
Skip The Needle was born from group of friends jamming: all veterans of multiple bands, tours, recording. The band features Shelley Doty (Shelley Doty X-tet, Jambay) guitar, Kofy Brown (Kofy Brown Band, Sistas in the Pit) drums, Katie Cash (Katie Cash, Dolorata, Year of the Fist) guitar and Vicki Randle (the Tonight Show, Mavis Staples) bass.
The band is the collective effort of four Bay area bandleaders, each lead singer, multi-instrumentalist, performer and songwriter. Lead singing duties rotate among the members while the others add background vocals. The songs are collectively written to showcase each member’s unique contributions, bringing together rock, funk, soul and fusion in an amalgam that rocks hard and is also musically diverse and complex; carries a strong, socially conscious message but wants everybody to party while hearing it. If Jimi Hendrix, Chrissie Hynde and Chaka Kahn cloned a baby, this band would be the result. Skip the Needle is reckless, eclectic, fearless and fun, dedicated to love and like nothing you've ever heard before. Skip the Needle Rocks the Love
Maya Songbird mixes Disco, Electro, Pop, and Funk to make her own out of this world sound influenced by being raised in the colorful and historic Castro District in SF. Themes of liberation, self-love, feminism, and empowerment permeate the artist’s extensive and diverse discography.
Songbird has hit many stages nationwide. A well known and loved local performer in the San Francisco Bay and Los Angeles metro areas, her sound can be heard echoing from the East Coast, as well. A favorite in Baltimore and Philly, with plenty of love also in the Pacific Northwest, Songbird’s music touches the heart of many and inspires many artists to walk their own path.
Tell Me Tell Me is a Bay Area garage rock band. Michael Bang and a drummer (usually Liz DeRoche, sometimes Jeff Mark, rarely Dan Coxon) play energetic guitar and drum music with strong melodies and off kilter songwriting. Inspired by the driving power of punk and indie rock, as well as the riffs of classic rock, the music of Tell Me Tell Me catapults you into places both familiar and unusual.
According to The Deli Magazine, "their self-titled EP drones in a way you can bang your head to, on tracks like the opener “Bipolar By Nature” that invite the listener into a washing machine of scudzy sounds that perfectly capture the angst of the Bay Area scene." Influences can heard from The White Stripes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Ty Segall, and while you’re never quite sure where their music is going to go, it always goes somewhere awesome.
