Once used as a slur against lesbians, it has been reclaimed by many as a political and chosen identity across queer communities. Today, people who identify with the term include lesbians, trans dykes, nonbinary people, masc and femme identities, and others who feel connected to the word’s history and cultural significance. As we develop the Dyke HERstory Dance Tour, Sarah Bush Dance Project is committed to engaging this history with care, curiosity, and openness. We recognize that the word carries different meanings and experiences for different people.DYKON Story Hour is intended as an inclusive, intergenerational space for listening, storytelling, and dialogue. Our goal is to honor the many people and communities who have shaped dyke culture and queer history in the Bay Area, while making room for conversation about how language, identity, and community continue to evolve.Meet our DYKONS https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events8/banners/f2ad74f0-8cb1-11f1-9760-d3acec93c3db-rimg-w562-h740-dcd8c8c8-gmir.jpg Kin FolkzKin Folkz (they/them) is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist, cultural archivist, educator, author, and human rights artivist based in Oakland, California. Lauded by The Huffington Post, selected as a 2018 San Francisco Pride Grand Marshal, and featured in the GLAAD Award-winning documentary State of Pride (2020), Kin’s work explores Black history, Afrofuturism, healing, identity, and collective liberation through immersive, community-centered art.Kin is the founder of the Queer Arts Center Gallery, one of the nation’s few Black queer and trans-led contemporary commercial galleries centering QTBIPOC artists and narratives. Through exhibitions, public art, digital archiving, and interdisciplinary programming, they create spaces where art preserves history, fosters healing, and inspires social change. Their community-engaged projects include the Bay Area’s largest community-painted street mural, bringing hundreds of participants together to help create a monumental public artwork proclaiming, “All Black Trans Queer NonBinary Woman Disabled Imprisoned Lives Matter.” Their work continues to expand creative access through culturally responsive arts education, community-building initiatives, and innovative public art experiences that connect generations through memory, creativity, and justice. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events10/banners/f2c2aaa0-8cb1-11f1-88dc-e3856eb2568f-rimg-w693-h740-dc382828-gmir.jpg Alex U. A foundational pillar of the Bay Area queer landscape, Alex is one of the original founders of the San Francisco LGBT Center and a prior SF Pride Board Member. Over a decorated, decades-long career, they have received multiple City of San Francisco and California Senate awards for outstanding community service and were recently honored with the prestigious Legend Award. As a legendary performer who has channeled creative resistance into profound community impact, Alex is a 6-time "Best of the Bay Drag King" winner and was canonized into sainthood by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. They are the founder of The House of KINGDOM!, a collective dedicated to providing a vital performance space, visibility, and a fundraising engine specifically for Drag Kings of Color, and a member of the kick-ass, live-vocal hip-hop drag troupe Momma’s Boyz, whose lyrics directly reflect the state of the world. As a past San Francisco Pride Parade People's Choice Community Grand Marshal and a critical force for groups like the MyNameIs Coalition, SF Pride’s NECTAR/Women’s Stage, UNLEASH! Dance Party, and the Committee for Queer Justice, Alex has spent their life fighting for systemic change. Driven by the belief that Pride belongs to the people, Alex partnered with drag icon Empress Juanita MORE! to co-found The People’s March, reclaiming the true roots of Pride with no commercialism, no policing, and ensuring that Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities lead the way forward.
