-- About the Artist Talk: --

In April 2022, Rosalie set out on a 6-month continuous road trip throughout the entire Appalachian range, from Alabama to Newfoundland. Along the way, she took notes and made observations that informed the body of work featured in her second book, Tiny Worlds of the Appalachian Mountains: An Artist’s Journey (2024), and the artwork featured in this exhibition. Rosalie will share stories from this trip and provide insights into her process for turning these discoveries in the field into vibrant illustrated works of art.

-- About the Workshop: --

In this relaxing, beginner-friendly class, nature illustrator Rosalie Haizlett will guide students through the process of sketching and painting a wide variety of moths and butterflies (alongside their caterpillar forms!) using gouache paint on black watercolor paper. Gouache—also called opaque watercolors—is a versatile, easy-to-use medium that’s a hybrid between watercolor & acrylic.

Weather permitting, we’ll start the class with a 15-minute walk to practice making quick observational sketches from life. Students will come away with a small, finished painting and gouache painting skills to carry with them into the future. All materials are provided!
