OAK PARK, Ill. — Oak Park will take center stage in the comedy world from Oct. 23-26 as Comedy Plex presents the inaugural Funny Is Female Comedy Festival. The four-day celebration of women in comedy features 55 stand-out comics from across the U.S. and beyond. With shows at two venues and a lineup that spans sharp stand-up, bold storytelling, and genre-defying performances, the festival promises to be as dynamic and diverse as the voices behind the mic. 

Headliners include: 
Megan Gailey (Comedy Central, The ESPYs, Conan) 
Patti Vasquez (The Patti Vasquez Show, My Life Is a Joke, WGN) 
Leslie Mitchell, opener for Dave Attell and Bobcat Goldthwait 
Nthenya, a Kenyan-born comic with global perspective and razor-sharp wit 
Starla Hines, seen on Netflix and Abbott Elementary 
Maxi Witrak, Los Angeles-based performer who has shared the stage with Arsenio Hall and Melissa Villaseñor Dozens more comediennes appearing have been seen on HBO, Apple TV+, Hulu, America’s Got Talent, and major national stages. 

“Chicago has always been a comedy city – from Jane Lynch’s biting wit and Amy Sedaris’s fearless weirdness to Tina Fey’s and Amy Poehler’s Second City hysterics,” said Angie McMahon, artistic director of the Funny Is Female Festival. “This festival builds on that legacy, amplifying the next generation of women who are redefining what funny looks like.” McMahon says women comprise only about 25% of the comedians booked on stages across the country, adding: “This festival is about shifting that balance and giving women a stronger voice on stage, in the industry, and in our cultural conversation.” 

 In addition to performances, the festival will feature industry panels and workshops on such topics as casting, social media strategy, and navigating the comedy business.
