SNL: SATURDAY NIGHT at the LIVERY presents “ICELAND THROUGH THE EYES OF A LOCAL WRITER”
Saturday Night at the Livery—Norwood Park & Recreation District’s ongoing but sporadic speakers’ series—presents a photographic and literary trip thru Iceland in search of sagas and horses and UNNA, thanks to Norwood-based writer Ellen Metrick agreeing to share her story.
For some reason yet to be known, a young character named Unna jumped into Metrick’s keyboard almost four years ago. Unna soon told Ellen to visit Iceland and tell her story. So she did in late February and early March 2025 (brrrrrr!), venturing into fiction and writing Unna’s story.
You’ll hear excerpts from the novel-in-progress and journey into the landscapes that inspired Jules Verne, JRR Tolkien, and of course, the Icelandic Sagas. Through the novel, you’ll enter a time when a few dragons still stalked the clouds, trolls weren’t all frozen into stones, and the Huldufólk were more visible than they are today.
Metrick, president of the Norwood Dark Sky Advocates Board of Directors, will also share some tips about that total eclipse people are talking about and offer planning advice for those interested in traveling to Iceland in August of 2026.
In addition, as per SNL tradition, we’ll enjoy some refreshments that align with the speaker’s theme, this time Icelandic snacks like fish jerky and fermented shark! Entry is $5, cash preferred.
This SNL makes it a dozen, the 13th coming up on December 13th featuring Disappointment Valley based author Kat Wilder with her new book, “The Last Cows: On Ranching, Wonder, and a Woman’s Heart” releasing November 1st by University of Nebraska Press.
