In his senior year at Northwood-Kensett high school, Marlyn Ashland was playing in a football game where he sustained a head injury which paralyzed the right side of his body and limited his speech. He overcame these obstacles to have a successful career as an artist.

Always having an interest in art since kindergarten, Marlyn received an MFA from Drake University with an emphasis in painting. He also earned three certificates from the Art Institute of Chicago. Later, he learned the meditative art practice of Zentangle, which he utilized in his fantastical drawings.
His work is part of the collections of the National Pork Board and the Iowa Soybean Association.

Marlyn Ashland has donated a number of original artworks to raise funds in support of Art Farm Iowa. Works include paintings, drawings, framed landscapes, sketchbooks, greeting cards, and more.
Thanks to Marlyn Ashland and to the collaboration with the Clear Lake Arts Center.
