People are afraid of shadows. People are even more afraid of being in the shadow. But without a shadow, life will be two-dimensional." -- Yoko Ono
Shadow Play
We all know how it feels to just not want to get out of bed in the morning, to slog through the day, and finally fall back into bed. What if instead we could turn our inertia into art, our resistance into momentum? To take a chance to dance out loud the tension in a jawbone or the shoulders, embody our stick figures and move out of them fully fleshed? To give up control, dive beneath the surface and melt the ice that casts the shadows we may often find ourselves moving through?
Shadow Play is a moving meditation into what’s moving us and what’s holding us back, down, and out. A dancing investigation into what’s hiding in the shadows and how we can tease whatever it is into motion, leaving heaviness behind as we dance into the effortless. It’s an opportunity to bemuse our shadows and let light be our muse. Rhythm by rhythm, step by step, Wave after Wave. Join us on the playground. It won't be the same without you, and your shadows.
Prerequisite: All are welcome to join. No prior dance or 5Rhythms experience is necessary.
Note: This workshop counts towards 2.5 Days of Waves on the 5Rhythms Teacher training path.

About the Teacher
Tammy started practicing the 5Rhythms® in the 20th century, emerged as a 5Rhythms® teaching at the dawn of the 21st, and has been living them since before she knew they existed. She is an urban life form who made New York City her home base and soul inspiration until 2020, and the mountains of NY State her continuing teacher since then. An itinerant wonderer she is a 5Rhythms Global and 5Rhythms Teacher Training teaching staff member, teaching the Waves (2001), Heartbeat (2010) and Cycles (2015) maps locally and globally. She has made her living as a dancer, a lighting designer, a travel agent, and a librarian. She creates her life dancing the 5Rhythms®
“Tammy is an exceptional woman, teacher and DJ both on and off the floor. I encourage you all to experience the grounded, soft, wild dancing space that she has created.”– Jonathan Horan, Director of 5Rhythms Global.

What is the 5Rhythms Practice:
The 5Rhythms comprise a simple movement practice designed to release the dancer that lives in every body, no matter what its shape, size, age, limitations and experience. The 5Rhythms dance practice was founded by Gabrielle Roth; an urban shaman. The practice itself is simple, there are no steps to follow. The teaching is deep. And it comes from the dancer's wisdom and embodied insight. In each dance, we explore each of the 5 rhythms, not for its mastery, but for its medicine. We will co-create a space to experience the rhythms of flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness (also known as a 5Rhythms Wave).

A word about touch, courtesy & consent:
By participating in this class you agree to be a partner in co-creating a safe and brave space for our collective dance practice. Since this dance practice is non-verbal, please make eye contact with other dancers before touch. Even if it’s your best friend or partner, on the dance floor we honor sovereignty. Someone may be having a deep experience, some dancers dance with eyes partially closed or focused downwards and touch could be disruptive or dis-regulating. On the dance floor, please use your eyes as a means for engagement. Once your eyes have met, please signal to invite engagement and if you are not open to touch, please say or signal to your partner that you are not open to physical contact (ie; offering a Namaste, or arms crossed, or by walking away).
Welcome Statement
We recognize and welcome all. All races, all religions, all
gender identities, all sexual orientations, all abilities, all
shapes and sizes, all languages, all ages.
The space is accessible to all bodies. If you'll want access to the elevator, please contact me in advance for instructions on use of the elevator.
