PULSE MAGAZINE-review...
The proliferation of technology has had a levelling effect when it comes to making art. For a few hundred pounds musicians can replicate the sound of Abbey Road, and for a similar amount a film-maker can purchase a professional editing suite. The result is that artists are wrestling back the means of production and for the first time in a long time, art is becoming interesting again. Case in point being Peace Frog, the kind of film the big studios should make, but they don’t, which is why they are in perpetual decline, but on the flip side it leaves the field open for the likes of Jack Parker’s skewed eye.
It’s guerilla film-making in which Jack Parker deals, a kind of celluloid collage that makes cuts and jumps in seemingly random fashion that can be disorientating at first, yet once you get in the flow of the film it makes perfect sense. It’s an approach that often verges on the surreal (think David Lynch meets the Blair Witch) with a soundtrack that’s just as jarring as the images with disparate genres fused in a random manner, yet in the story arc it is a perfect fit.
Like the very best art, Jack leaves plenty of room for the viewer to infer their own meaning and that makes the film more of an interactive experience. Powered by copious amounts of illicit “substances” (hence the surrealist tone), a chap befriends a magic frog and they set out on a mission to bring order to a chaotic world. It’s a journey that takes them from Birmingham’s Digbeth to Northampton’s Weston Favell (and the infamous pyramid shaped church), a sojourn that features a cameo from the Town’s very own Venus Fly Trap performing at The Black Prince, and off to the capital, all while sporting some impressive T-shirts (including several by Magnum; I told you it was surreal).
Taking the toad-licking legend and turning it into an enjoyable film, whilst taking the viewer on a 100-minute “trip”, Peace Frog is a triumph.
