- **Event Description**: Mochi (餅, もち) is a Japanese rice cake made of mochigome, a shortgrain sweet rice.  The sweet rice is steamed and then pounded into a large blob, which then is cut into the desired sized pieces.  During the New Year we partake of a special preparation ceremony called Mochitsuki usually held between Dec.25 and 28th.  This is a community event in which the hot, molten mochi is put into a large Usu (motar) and Kine (pestle).  When performing mochitsuki, a certain rhythm must be maintained, so as not to smash the hands of your partner in the motar.  Many times, people attending the ceremony will take turns at both of these positions.  Kagami mochi is usually displayed from December 26 to 28, with the best day to set it up being around December 28. The kagami mochi is not displayed on the 29th or 31st because the 29th sounds like the Japanese word for "suffering" and the 31st is considered too last-minute.

We will have a short Sunday Service and then begin to work on the making the mochi.
