Restore Hibiscus & Bays and Te Herenga Waka o Orewa are working together to restore the marae grounds, care for the riverbank, and look after the awa.

In June 2025, we planted oioi in areas where the removal of the derelict tug Wakatū had churned up the riverbank, and transplanted māakoako (sea primrose) to help stabilise and restore this important site.

Now the mahi continues. Join us for a couple of hours of kaitiakitanga in action as we care for this special place together.
Pī mahi - Working bee dates: 21 March, 26 April, 31 May & 20 June

Te mahi o te rā:
- Giving the new plants some aroha by removing encroaching weeds
- Clearing weeds from last year’s planting site
- Tackling ecological weeds such as Japanese honeysuckle that threaten native plants
- Continuing the clean-up of the river and riverbank

Also keep an eye out for details on the Matariki planting day on Saturday 11 July.

This is a great opportunity to get involved, learn more about caring for our local awa, and support the ongoing restoration of the marae grounds and riverbank.

Gardening gloves, water bottle, snacks, sturdy shoes or boots, and dress for the weather.
