Jazz Vespers Welcomes The Brandon Isaak Trio on March 1
Blues musician Brandon Isaak will be the featured performer at Jazz Vespers at St. John’s United Church on March 1st at 7:00 p.m. A multiple nominee for the 2026 Canadian Blues Music Awards, Isaak will be joined by Ryan Tandy on bass, and Phil Whipper on drums.
Brandon Isaak’s commitment to straight-up, authentic, old-school blues, and his deep respect for tradition shine in his guitar and harmonica work and gravelly vocals. His latest album Walkin’ With The Blues, which he also produced and engineered, has been nominated for a 2026 Canadian Blues Music Award in numerous categories: Male Vocalist of the Year, Guitarist of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Producer of the Year. With over 37 years on the road including thirteen European tours, Isaak’s other accolades include a 2024 Juno nomination for Blues Album of the Year and four nominations at the 2023 Maple Blues Awards.
Ryan Tandy's bass playing is inspired by Ray Brown, informed by Christian McBride, and influenced by Ken Lister, but the solid time and visible enthusiasm he brings to the bandstand are all his own. Born in Auckland, NZ, and raised in Victoria, Ryan played gigs on piano, bass, and drums in high school before going on to establish his career as a bassist. He's been a member of Lust Life Jazz Band since 2009 and appears on their CD "On Remembrance"(2011). In 2012, Ryan joined Nick La Riviere, Art Booker, and Damian Graham in forming New Orleans-inspired funk group The Hi-Fi, who recorded their second EP, "Coffee and Candy", in 2014. An in-demand sideman, Ryan appears alongside local and touring artists. Recent highlights include performances with Maureen Washington, David Vest, Tia Brazda, and Michael Kaeshammer.
The Jazz Vespers series will continue on April 12th with vocalist Sara Marreiros.
All jazz vespers services begin at 7:00 p.m. St. John’s United Church is located at 10990 West Saanich Rd., across from Deep Cove School.
An offering will be taken to fairly compensate the musicians and cover the Vespers program (suggested donation is $20 per person.) Everyone is welcome.
