- **Event Start and End Date**: Tue, 21 Apr, 2026 at 05:00 pm – Tue, 21 Apr, 2026 at 09:00 pm (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: Providence Geeks and the RI Computer Museum (RICM) welcome you to an evening with Professor Emerita Joan Peckham, The Rt. Rev. W. Nicholas Knisely, and Associate Professor of Teaching Indrani Mandal, who conducted a sold-out Understanding AI for Safe and Secure Use course at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at URI.

This course, presented over three sessions, offered introductory information about the nature of AI and explored how we can use AI safely, ethically, and securely. Each will share a lightning talk on their perspectives on these aspects of artificial intelligence, and we'll open things up for Q&A as well.

After the talk, stick around for informal chatter, hands-on time with old computers, and tinkering with electronics.

Joan Peckham is URI Professor Emerita of Computer Science and was a program director at the NSF, URI Chair of Computer Science and Statistics, and led campus initiatives on data and AI. She now publishes on AI ethics and sustainability.

The Rt. Rev. W. Nicholas Knisely, SOSc is bishop of the Rhode Island Episcopal Church. He serves as the church’s lead bishop for science, is a member of the church’s AI Task Force, and delivers presentations on AI nationally. He taught physics and astronomy at Lehigh University and the University of Delaware. His current interest is in the intersection of technology and human ethics.

Indrani Mandal is associate teaching professor of computer science, and education and outreach coordinator of the AI Lab at URI. Her expertise includes AI, data science, inclusive educational pedagogy, and outreach. She leads initiatives that support learners of all abilities.

RICM will be providing food and soft drinks for the event, but there are many take-out restaurants nearby. We will not be providing alcoholic beverages, but it will be a BYOB event. However, please bear in mind that we will have guests of all ages!
