- **Event Description**: During this highly anticipated event, we will be assisting with long-standing restoration efforts within a beautiful, but recently maligned, oak savanna along Arcade Creek in the “Cap City Triangle Natural Area”. The Triangle is bordered by the Capital City Freeway, Longview Drive, and Watt Avenue.

Dozens of illegal camps have occupied and severely degraded the sensitive ecology of the area for many years, but thanks to a concerted effort by Del Paso Regional Park steward Tim Vendlinski, Caltrans and Sacramento City Parks (YPCE), the camps have been removed and restoration work is underway.

PRE-CLEANUP
Last week, YPCE deployed their cleaning contractor for a “pre-cleanup” at the Triangle, and trash was also collected from  Longview Drive west of Watt Avenue along the boundary of Longview Oaks Preserve. Rangers also escorted 3 persistent campers out of the streambed along with their 2 large dogs and multiple cats which allowed the removal of most of their abundant trash, textiles, and plastics.

PLOWING WITH GANNON BOX
This Thursday (9/4), YPCE will deploy a tractor operator with a Gannon box with tines to plow the parcel as authorized in an encroachment permit from Caltrans.

REMOVAL OF ENTRAINED TRASH
Once the parcel is plowed, our volunteer team will arrive on Friday (9/5) to remove trash previously buried during the County’s post-COVID-shutdown cleanup. YPCE will handle the trash hauling.

CONSOLIDATING NOXIOUS WEEDS
The noxious weeds will be scraped into piles before the parcel is plowed. This way, the “biomass” of the weeds can be consolidated to specific areas onsite. If they are crushed in place, the weeds will at least partially self-compost, so the viability of the W**d seeds are minimized. 

NATIVE PERENNIAL GRASSES
Once all this work is done, Tim will sow into the clean topsoil a mix of locally-sourced, native grass seed that he is donating to the cause. He had previously been successful at introducing perennial grasses into the parcel, but those grasses and most of the oaks planted by Caltrans were destroyed by campers.

BIODIVERSITY 
These perennial grasses are more fire-safe than the annual non-native grasses as they grow deep roots and stay greener during the summer. They are also much more beneficial from the perspective of biological diversity as they support native pollinators and provide nourishing seed for grassland-dependent birds.

RECOVERY OF WILD OAKS
A number of wild “naturally-recruited” blue oaks and live oaks are sprouting from damaged stumps, and we will be careful to retain these when the site is plowed on Thursday. 

AGE LIMIT: This event is not suitable for minors under 12 years old. Minors 12 and older are invited, but must be supervised by a responsible adult during the entire event.

RCWA will provide bags, but please bring along your sturdy footwear, grabbers, buckets and gloves - a limited number of loaner buckets and grabbers may be available. Recommended (but not required): shovels, cultivators, rope and hay hooks.
 
As with all events shared by RCWA, participation is performed solely at your own risk. Please place safety FIRST and do only what you feel comfortable doing. Moreover, participants will be required to sign a Release and Waiver form if they have not done so previously.
