Remarkable Charlestonians in the AmericanAbout this EventItinerant Literate Books presents an evening with author Peter McCandless on his new book, Remarkable Charlestonians in the American RevolutionJoin us on the Commonground at Commonhouse Aleworks in Park Circle for an illuminating discussion of little-known Charleston history and book signing by author Peter McCandless. He draws on deep research to bring to light the extraordinary stories of men and women in Charleston in 1775 and beyond—famous and obscure, free and enslaved, Patriots and Loyalists—whose lives intersected with the American Revolution and challenge our assumptions about that era. This event is free to attend. Books will be available for purchase night of or can be ordered ahead of time on our website.About the book:Remarkable Charlestonians in the American Revolution shines a light on people who fought for liberty on both sides of the conflict. In 1775 Charleston stood on the brink of eight years of war. The War for Independence in Charleston was as much a civil war as a revolution—neighbors, friends, and families divided. McCandless tells the stories of people from all walks of life—women and men; Black and white; famous and unknown—whose actions altered the course of local history and challenge the public memory of the era.About the Author:Peter McCandless received his doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He taught history at the College of Charleston, retiring as distinguished professor emeritus. He won the college’s Distinguished Teaching Award and was selected as a South Carolina Governor’s Distinguished Professor. Much of his early work focused on mental disease, culminating in Moonlight, Magnolias, and Madness: Insanity in South Carolina from the Colonial Period to the Progressive Era (University of North Carolina Press, 1996). His book Slavery, Disease, and Suffering in the Southern Lowcountry (Cambridge University Press, 2011) was awarded the SHEAR Prize in 2012. Hosted by Itinerant Literate BooksWe’re a Charleston-based bookstore committed to bringing vibrant dialogue, local authors, and meaningful stories to our community. We’re delighted to partner with Commonhouse Aleworks to bring you this special evening of history, conversation, and connection.
