Description and Objectives:
During M2C’s unique 2-day interactive training in Motivational Interviewing, participants will
heighten their communication self-awareness and the impact they have on how they communicate
both verbally and non-verbally with their respective client interactions. Day 1, participants will gain
an understanding of the brief history of MI, acquire the skills and understanding of the MI spirit,
and obtain a working knowledge of the OARS active listening skills to create the foundation of
motivational conversations. Day 2, participants will gain a working understanding of the stages of
change, the 4 tasks of MI, and the tools to elicit and strengthen change talk. Participants will be
able to identify and utilize basic communication skills and strategies of Motivational Interviewing
through demonstration, role-plays and case studies tailored to their clientele. Additionally,
participants will have a working understanding of the utilization of MI skills within respective client
stage of change. At the end of the 2-day training, the trainer and peers will provide each participant
with individual feedback as well as continued resources to strengthen their MI skill level prior to an
optional follow up phase II training. Participants are highly encouraged to attend BOTH days of
training. However, for participants that have already completed an 8+ hour training in MI, they may
decide to only complete the second day of this series. Certificates will be given out both days for
participants who complete the full day of training.
