Their first host for a revival of this popular and informative mutual aid series since the pandemic is Foggy Meadows, that Brian and Michelle call home, sharing the land with gardens, beef cows, dairy cows and goats, laying hens, and several cats and dogs. Brian works as the Supervisor for the Village of Potsdam DPW, and Michelle works from home as an Independent Consultant for Pampered Chef. Their goal is to eat as close to home as possible, raising ethical meat and animal products, naturally grown vegetables and herbs, and homemade bread - so far, with five years in. All are welcome to join this session of the Homesteading Exchange & Potluck Gathering by the Local Living Venture. The farm is located at 729 Lime Hollow Road, near Norfolk, about 20 minutes from either Potsdam or Canton. Participants are asked to RSVP for planning purposes to LocalLivingVenture@gmail.com with their names and a phone number to reach them in case of changes. Before being purchased by them in December 2021, the 50 acre property at the border of Madrid, Norfolk and Potsdam, was occupied by Amish folks, and had many elements in place for building a life around self-sufficiency and peacefulness. That said, the house needed extensive renovation, and is close to being there, but still a work in progress. Each year, the pair maintains a 25' x 85' garden, that is tweaked to grow more and more of the items most used in the household, to minimize the amount of produce purchased elsewhere. Tomatoes, potatoes, onions, carrots, green beans, corn, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and several herbs are grown to minimize the amount purchased elesewhere. Self sufficiency of Foggy Meadows has expanded this past winter to include not only meat and produce, but bread, as Michelle has entered her "sourdough era." The first animals to join Foggy Meadows were laying hens, and the flock has grown to where they can spare some extra eggs. Goats were the next addition, though initially just two gentleman pet goats enjoying retirement from years of hobby farming. Genevieve the milking goat recently gave birth to Daisy, and another doeling brings the goat herd to five. Beef cows came in the Fall of 2022, Joanne and Stephanie were purchased as a cow/calf combination; the following spring, she gave birth to Alice and the herd currently totals ten. though it fluctuates as they sell the beef. Milking cows have also joined the mix, and plans for homemade all-natural cheeses are exciting! There are also plans for a roadside stand to be built this summer as Foggy Meadows matures into the homestead Michelle and Brian have worked to create. The couple will share their joys, trials and tribulations in their gardens, their home renovations, and with tending to a diverse cohort of farm critters - and a bonfire could be thrown into the mix as well! An initial tour of the farmstead will be followed by a potluck shared meal, featuring homemade bread, of course, and more in depth discussion of the farm life they have built. The Local Living Venture (LLV) is a St. Lawrence Valley-based community non-profit dedicated to sharing rural simple living skills through workshops and community events, based on a neighbor to neighbor model, with so many skills existing locally that others are interested in learning.
