Straddling the border between Massachetts and Connecticut, Campbell Falls is a 50-foot high waterfall on the Whiting River, which flows south to CT, where it meets the Blackberry River, a tributary of the Housatonic watershed. This hike will include a discussion of forest and land use history and connections to river and stream health in the Berkshires.The walk down to the falls follows a switchback trail that is steep at times. Bring hiking poles if needed. This hike is 2 hours long and will cover about 2 miles.Meet at 2 p.m. at the Campbell Falls Road trailhead in Norfolk, CT (NOT the MA trailhead):CT Campbell Falls TrailheadGPS 42.042526928135544, -73.22649705082019All hikers are required to wear proper footwear with good tread (hiking boots, or sturdy sneakers)—no sandals or open-toed shoes! Please remember to bring water to drink, food to fuel your hike, and to dress appropriately for the weather, including bringing layers for warmth or precipitation as necessary. Please also bring sun protection, such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats. Hikers are advised to wear long pants, long sleeves, and long socks to help keep ticks off. Insect repellant (Deet, Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, 2-undecanone) is recommended. All parks are take-in, take-out—the only thing we’ll leave behind are footprints.
