#########################
✨ FULL WALK DESCRIPTION ON OFFER FOR THIS HIKE ?
#########################

Our trail begins at the parking area beside Malkopsvlei (Mad Head Lake), also known as Betty’s Bay’s inland freshwater swimming lagoon. From here, we follow the trail down to the main Betty’s Bay beach, continuing along the shoreline until we reach Boskop and the start of the coastal cliff-face trail. Along the way, we encounter “Die Been” (Afrikaans for The Leg), a striking rocky outcrop that juts dramatically into the ocean and is one of the coastline’s most distinctive natural features.

As we progress, the route takes us past the Old Whaling Station, which operated between 1912 and 1930. Today, only remnants remain—slipways, concrete foundations, and old blubber tanks—silent witnesses to a bygone era. The larger Stony Point Whaling Station, active from the 1940s until its closure in 1975, processed thousands of whales, mainly southern right and humpback. At its peak, more than 300 whales per year were killed, a sobering reminder of the cruelty of industrial whaling. The station finally closed when South Africa banned whaling in line with international conservation efforts. Nearby, we also encounter the evocative wreck of the Una, a vessel lost to the waves in 1926. Broken apart by storms, its remnants were scattered along the shore, with some salvaged by locals and others still embedded in the rocks.

From here, the trail leads us past the Stony Point Penguin Sanctuary, one of the Cape’s most remarkable conservation success stories. Once the site of the whaling station, it has been transformed into a thriving refuge for endangered African penguins. Stony Point is one of only two mainland penguin colonies in South Africa, the other being Boulders in Simon’s Town. The sanctuary stands as a powerful symbol of renewal, where a place of exploitation has become one of protection and hope.

Continuing onward, we pass Draadbaai and Waaigat before arriving at Silver Sands Beach, a breathtaking stretch of soft white sand, towering dunes, and sweeping ocean views. Our journey then takes us to Masbaai, where we pause for a well-deserved lunch break. Afterward, we retrace our steps, enjoying alternative views of the seascapes and the majestic Kogelberg Mountains. At the end of the trail, we can finish of the trail with a cooling off swim in the Malkopsvlei (Mad Head Lake)

• We walk the same scenic routes as other groups, but take longer
• Breaks are built in — usually around 2 hours throughout the day
• We walk at the pace of the slowest person, with no pressure
• An experienced hiker always stays at the rear to assist & ensure no one is left behind
• We carry first aid kits ? and 2–5 two-way radios ? to stay connected between front & rear guides

?Soulful Nature Walks Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/soulfulnaturewalks/

This is the perfect group for beginners too.
Every second walk is suitable for all fitness levels, giving you a chance to build stamina gradually. We also avoid repeating hiking routes within a 12-month cycle, offering a wide and varied selection of trails. If a hike is more strenuous or exposed, this will be clearly communicated in the walk description — often by comparing it to well-known routes like Lion’s Head.

#########################
?DIRECTIONS FROM CAPE TOWN
Driving Directions from Cape Town City Centre
#########################

⚠️ VERY IMPORTANT: Regardless of the walk, please bring at least 2 litres of water—and 3 litres if the day is hot or humid. This is non-negotiable for joining any of our walks. We hike to connect with nature, each other, and ourselves—but we also prioritise safety and preparedness. By bringing enough water, you help ensure a smooth, enjoyable experience for yourself and the group.

? Before You Leave – Travel Reminder - Please make sure your directions are clearly sorted before setting out for the walk. Some of our meeting points are in remote or mountainous areas where cell phone reception can be limited or unreliable, especially if you're relying on mobile data or GPS apps.

A little preparation goes a long way—it helps us all arrive on time, feeling relaxed and ready to connect with nature. If you're unsure about the route or need help with directions, feel free to reach out before the day of the hike—I'm happy to assist.
