✨ DETAILED FULL WALK DESCRIPTION ON OFFER FOR THIS HIKE ?
#########################

The circular trail begins at the entrance to the Grabouw Country Club within the reserve. From here, we follow the path along the dam to the indigenous forest, where we pause for our first break. The journey then continues to Giants Washbasin Falls, a perfect spot for our lunch break. Here, hikers can enjoy a revitalizing swim while taking in the breathtaking waterfall and the dramatic rock formations that surround it.

Giants Washbasin Falls is a magnificent multi-tiered waterfall that cascades gracefully into a crystal-clear pool. Its flow is constant throughout the year, though it is most spectacular during and after the rainy season when the volume increases. The name comes from the pool’s resemblance to a giant washbasin, making it an inviting place to swim or cool off. The surrounding landscape is rich with striking rock formations and lush vegetation, with vibrant Proteas and Ericas adding seasonal bursts of color.

After a relaxing lunch and swim, we continue downstream along the Wesselsgat River. This section of the trail offers serene river views, lush vegetation, and the soothing sound of flowing water. The path meanders through vibrant fynbos and provides opportunities to spot local birdlife. Unique rock formations and small cascades add charm to this stretch, leading us toward the dramatic Curtain Falls.

As we approach Curtain Falls, the sound of rushing water signals one of the trail’s highlights. Water cascades over a rocky ledge in a curtain-like effect, forming a cool pool beneath shaded indigenous trees. This tranquil setting is ideal for swimming, photography, and quiet reflection. After enjoying this break, we begin the final leg of the hike along Eikenhof Dam, where panoramic views of the water, mountains, and fynbos-covered hillsides provide a gentle and restorative conclusion to the day’s adventure.

? THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, PLEASE ENSURE THIS IS READ BELOW
#########################

@@@ This is a reminder and critical when joining any of the hikes on offer, don’t forget your water, this should be at least 2 litres and @ least 3 litres if it is a hot day. A Rain Coat should be brought along on all hikes, no matter the weather conditions, as this also acts as a wind breaker. Weather conditions can change unexpectedly. It often happens that in the area you're driving from, the weather is quite different to where we are hiking on the day. What to wear on the hike. Comfortable hiking clothes (trousers / shorts). In winter, long pants are preferable due to the change of temperatures. Jersey or fleecy top. As the weather often heats up during the day, it is good to wear clothes that you can layer on or off. Pack extra, thinner tops, as gusty wind can cause the temperature to change quite dramatically. In summer, a peak cap for the sun, in a winter beanie or buff and gloves just in case. Remember, a warm hiker is a happy hiker ;-) --- being cold or wet on route affects you and the group adversely.

#########################
?ABOUT THIS SOULFUL TRAIL EXPERIENCE
#########################

What’s on offer is a soulful nature experience shared with like-minded people, with plenty of extra time allocated for breaks to appreciate the beauty of our surroundings. This includes a morning tea break en route, a relaxed lunch stop, and quiet time in nature for reflection on the return leg—weather and timing permitting

#########################
? No-Show & Late Cancellation Policy
#########################

For this trail, any no-shows or cancellations made within 24 hours of the walk—unless due to illness and you've called or messaged me—will incur a no-show fee on your next booking. This applies especially when someone books on behalf of one or two friends and those friends don’t show up or cancel late. In such cases, the person who made the booking will be responsible for the additional cost per person on the next walk.

?️ The only exception to this policy is if rain is forecast on the day of the walk. This rule helps us maintain a safe group size and avoid turning away others who could have joined if cancellations were made in time.

? Contact: Iain Macdonald — Tel: 072 327 2840
? You're also welcome to message me on WhatsApp.

#########################

Please do read the instructions in full as it contains all the relevant instructions for the hike, for example, meeting time, what to bring, fitness, and starting point. For future in my group, those who have not let me know before the walk starting, will be removed from the walk listing.

#########################
?️ GROUP SAFETY & FITNESS
#########################

This message is for anyone new to hiking or joining our group walks for the first time — especially if you're concerned about fitness

? Pace & Support

• We walk the same scenic routes as other groups, but take longer

• Breaks are built in — usually around 2 hours throughout the day

• We walk at the pace of the slowest person, with no pressure

• An experienced hiker always stays at the rear to assist & ensure no one is left behind

• We carry first aid kits ? and 2–5 two-way radios ? to stay connected between front & rear guides

?Soulful Nature Walks Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/soulfulnaturewalks/

This is the perfect group for beginners too.

Every second walk is suitable for all fitness levels, giving you a chance to build stamina gradually. We also avoid repeating hiking routes within a 12-month cycle, offering a wide and varied selection of trails. If a hike is more strenuous or exposed, this will be clearly communicated in the walk description — often by comparing it to well-known routes like Lion’s Head.

#########################
? WHAT TO BRING & SAFETY GUIDELINES
#########################

These requirements apply to all walks. Individual safety affects the whole group.

1. Proper Footwear (Most Important)

Wear comfortable walking shoes, hiking boots (for ankle support), or a good pair of running shoes. No crocs, sandals, bare feet, or unsuitable footwear. Good grip is essential for safety.

In winter, bring a black plastic bag to sit on if grass or rocks are wet — it keeps your clothing dry.

2. Rain Protection

A raincoat is essential in all weather conditions. It also serves as a windbreaker.

3. Be Prepared for Weather Changes

Conditions can change quickly. The weather where you start your journey may be very different from the hiking location. Always pack for possible changes.

4. Food, Water & Sun Protection

Bring snacks for tea breaks and lunch — e.g., trail mix, fresh fruit, juice, or a flask with tea/coffee (or cup-a-soup in winter).

Carry at least 2 litres of water (more on hot days). Aim to drink at least one full cup every 60 minutes.

Apply sunscreen before the hike and reapply as needed.

5. Clothing

• Wear comfortable hiking clothes (trousers or shorts). In winter, long pants are preferable.

• Bring a jersey or fleece top. Dress in layers so you can adjust to changing temperatures.

• Choose polyester, nylon, or merino wool for base layers (briefs, tees, sports bras, long underwear, socks). These fabrics wick moisture and dry quickly.

• Avoid cotton — it loses insulation when wet and can increase the risk of hypothermia. Read more here.

• A synthetic wicking T-shirt is ideal and affordable at stores like Mr Price Sport, Sportsmans Warehouse, or Outdoor Warehouse.

• Pack extra lightweight tops for wind changes.

• In summer: wear a peak cap for sun protection.

• In winter: bring a beanie or buff and gloves.

6. Recommended Reading

What to Wear When Hiking – REI Expert Advice - https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/how-to-choose-hiking-clothes.html

Starter essentials: wicking T-shirt, good hiking boots or running shoes with grip, and a quality raincoat.

7. Backpack

Bring a backpack or daypack for your supplies. A hip belt helps transfer weight to your pelvis, reducing strain on your shoulders.

8. Emergency Gear

Carry a reflective emergency blanket (available at Cape Union Mart, Mr Price Sport, or Outdoor Warehouse for R20–R30). It’s lightweight, compact, and helps retain body heat in emergencies.

9. Group Safety

Stay with the group for the entire hike. We depart and return together — this is non-negotiable, as leaving early affects the whole group.

10. Dogs

Unfortunately, no dogs are allowed on any of our walks.

11. Breaks & Social Time

We usually set aside about two hours for breaks. These are a great opportunity to connect with like‑minded people who share your love of nature.

#########################
?DIRECTIONS FROM CAPE TOWN

Driving Directions from Cape Town City Centre
#########################

⚠️ VERY IMPORTANT: Regardless of the walk, please bring at least 2 litres of water—and 3 litres if the day is hot or humid. This is non-negotiable for joining any of our walks. We hike to connect with nature, each other, and ourselves—but we also prioritise safety and preparedness. By bringing enough water, you help ensure a smooth, enjoyable experience for yourself and the group.

? Before You Leave – Travel Reminder - Please make sure your directions are clearly sorted before setting out for the walk. Some of our meeting points are in remote or mountainous areas where cell phone reception can be limited or unreliable, especially if you're relying on mobile data or GPS apps.

A little preparation goes a long way—it helps us all arrive on time, feeling relaxed and ready to connect with nature. If you're unsure about the route or need help with directions, feel free to reach out before the day of the hike—I'm happy to assist.
